Beware of the Devil’s 5 D’s:
As followers of Christ, we will face hard times. It is a false concept and a disservice to others to teach them that once you accept Christ as your Savior that all of your problems will go away.
Jesus tells us in John 15:18-19 that “if the world hates you, keep in mind that they hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as it’s own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”
So as followers of Christ we should watch out for the following tactics of the Devil: (quoted from the NIV commentary on Genesis)
Doubt: Makes you question God’s Word and His goodness.
Discouragement: Makes you look at how big your problems are rather than how big God is.
Diversion: Makes the wrong things seem attractive so that you will want them more than the right things.
Defeat: Makes you feel like a failure so that you don’t even try
Delay: Makes you put off doing something so that it never gets done.
Jesus tells us that He is with us always and He then encourages us with the peace of knowing the following:
The Battle is already Won:
“In this world you will have trouble. Bur take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33b
Jesus prays for us:
“I pray for them” John 17:9
And He is praying for our protection while we are fulfilling our purpose:
“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” John 17:15
We can overcome doubt with the knowledge that Jesus has already won the battle.
We can overcome discouragement with the knowledge that Jesus is praying for us and our protection.
We can overcome diversion by staying around those who will help hold us accountable, staying disciplined in our prayer and studies, and by staying away from things that we know will distract us.
God has already won the battle so we must remember this when we feel defeated. Our perspective is limited and we must learn to trust Him. When we are weak He is strong!
To overcome delay or putting things off we must remember the concept of responsible grace: If God gives you the ability then you have the responsibility to accomplish the task.
Don’t give the devil an inch because he will become your ruler. You have the power to rebuke the devil through Jesus Christ.
